Comprehensive Rules Update for Set 3
Rules
As it was said in a previous article made by one of the member of our community, a lot of the text for cards in the Vol. 3 booster set were not written in accordance with the game’s comprehensive rules. This situation was due to the final card list being rushed to the printing process without a proper review by our rules manager and others tasked with checking card text. As a result, we were unable to deliver you a product that was properly vetted from a rules perspective.
To fix the problems that have been caused by this, we have issued erratas for a large number of these cards. With these erratas, we aimed to ensure that the cards functioned as intended by our development team while working within the game’s established rules, but also keeping any changes to the original card texts as minimal as possible.
New Rules for Booster Set Vol. 3
Damage Reversal
[Vabelcion, the Battle-Forged] (2021GB03-002)
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Put 1 card from your hand on the bottom of your deck.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
Sentinel Summoning (Instant Action: If it's currently your opponent's turn, normal summon this.)
¦"Göndul's Barrage" - Standard Action: [DR 3] Choose 1 enemy card in play and put it into the graveyard.
Damage reversal is a game action where you flip over a specified number of face-up cards in your damage zone face down, written in the format “DR (number to flip face down)”.
- You cannot perform damage reversal at all if you do not have the required number of face up cards in your damage zone. In this case, no cards are flipped face down.
- Damage reversal written as “DR (number): (condition)” means “Flip face down (number) face up cards in your damage zone that fulfill the (condition)”. If multiple conditions are specified as in “DR (number): (condition) or (condition)”, then each card you flip face down must fulfill at least 1 of the conditions specified.
- A face down card in your damage zone is treated as having none of the information printed on it. However, it still counts as 1 card in your damage zone (for example, you can still choose a face down card when healing life).
- Face down cards in a damage zone are revealed only to the player that owns that damage zone, and that player can check the hidden side of those cards at any time.
- You cannot play a face down card in your damage zone with an effect that would play a card in your damage zone, even if it allowed you to play a card without paying its cost. So if you tried to play a face down card with something like [Schrödinger's Cat] (2020GB01-098), it would do nothing.
Discount
[Thermobaric Bomb] (2021GB03-050)
Timing: Standard Action
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Put 1 card from your hand on the bottom of your deck.] to instead pay a cost of 1 to play this.
¦Destroy all set cards.
Discount allows you to pay a specific cost when playing a card to exhaust less resources than the card’s level.
- The cost specified by the discount is performed when you decide the number of resources to exhaust pay for the card, and it is strictly optional. You can always choose to pay the full cost of the card instead.
- If your ruler is an [Overlord], you can still perform the actions specified in the discount, but you will still pay exactly 1 resource for playing the card (even if the resource cost would be reduced to 0).
Sentinel Summoning
[Vabelcion, the Battle-Forged] (2021GB03-002)
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Put 1 card from your hand on the bottom of your deck.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
Sentinel Summoning (Instant Action: If it's currently your opponent's turn, normal summon this.)
¦"Göndul's Barrage" - Standard Action: [DR 3] Choose 1 enemy card in play and put it into the graveyard.
Sentinel Summoning allows you to normal summon a unit as an instant action during your opponent’s turn.
- You can do this as an instant action, so you can play it at any time you could play an instant action event, including in response to your opponent playing a card, during combat, or when they end their turn.
- This counts as a normal summon, and you still have to pay the cost of the card as usual. However, you ignore your summon cap during your opponent’s turn.
Deadly
[Dark Knight Gododdin] (2021GB03-005)
?TD? Choose 1 "Dark Knight" unit of level 1 or less in your graveyard. Special summon it.
¦Your "Dark Knight" cards have Deadly (A unit that is dealt combat damage by a unit with Deadly is destroyed at the end of the damage step).
Deadly is an automatic ability which causes a unit that was dealt combat damage to be destroyed.
- The ability is activated with 1 or more points of combat damage. If the combat damage dealt is 0, then the ability is not activated.
- As long as the damage dealt to a unit is combat damage, the ability is activated. This includes combat damage dealt through effects of abilities like Intercept and Retaliate.
- The ability does not get activated through any damage that is not combat damage. If a unit with Deadlycould deal effect damage to another unit, that will not activate Deadly.
- This ability is activated at the end of combat. (The reminder text says “at the end of the damage step”, but this is incorrect.)
Ability Names with “<>”
[ERRATA] [Ox Oni Tenkai] (2021GB03-072)
Updated Text: ¦This is treated as being level 0 for <Hundred Yokai March>.
[ERRATA] [Shinno Akugoro, King of the Renegades] (2021GB03-058 & 2021GB03-UR09)
Updated Text: ¦This is treated as being level 0 for <Hundred Yokai March>.
¦This cannot be placed in a defense zone.
¦"Lotus Hex" - Standard Action: [Remove 1 Supernatural card in your graveyard from the game.] Choose 1 enemy unit and deal 1 damage to it.
¦"Lord of the Ayakashi": As this would leave play, you may [DR 3: Supernatural]. If you do, this remains in play instead.
“<>” in the text of a card will indicate that it is referring to any ability with a name that includes the exact phrase within the <>. For example, if it says <Hundred Yokai March> , that means the card or ability is referencing any ability with “Hundred Yokai March” in its name, such as “Hundred Yokai March Lv.0”. The current printing of the cards that do this do not have <>, so they have been given an errata which adds them.
- When an ability A is referencing an ability B through the use of <>, ability A is active only when resolving ability B or its applying its effects. For example, in the case of [Ox Oni Tenkai], its ability is active when a “Hundred Yokai March” ability is being played--regardless of which zone the [Ox Oni Tenkai] is in, including the deck or drive zone.
Normal Summon as an Instant Action
[ERRATA] [A7 "Cheshire" the Cat] (2021GB03-041)
Updated Text: ¦This unit can be normal summoned as an instant action.
TD - Choose 1 allied unit. Until the end of turn, it gains +1 HP.
¦"A Grin without a Cat" - Turn 1 - Standard Action: Return this to your hand.
* All cards that say “Instant Action: Normal summon this.” or something similar have been given an errata to instead say “This can be normal summoned as an instant action”.
Some units in Vol. 3 can be summoned as an instant action instead of a standard action.
- This still counts as a normal summon, so you still have to pay its cost and not have reached the limit of your summon cap for the turn. However, you ignore your summon cap during your opponent’s turn.
- You can normal summon a unit with this ability as an instant action from your drive zone as well. However, it will still get sent to the graveyard at the end of the main phase if you do not play the card beforehand. Also, if the unit has an ?OD? ability, you must either choose not to use that ability or fully resolve it before you can normal summon the unit.
- If somehow you are able to play a unit with this ability from somewhere outside of your hand or drive zone, you can still play it as an Instant Action.
Events that Can Be Played Directly From a Hand
[Sword of Bruncvík] (2021GB03-051)
?CNT?: Play this card.
Timing: Instant Action
¦This event can also be played directly from your hand.
¦Choose 1 enemy unit and deal 2 damage to it. Then, deal 2 damage to it again.
Normally, event cards with timings other than “standard action” can only be played from a set zone. However, booster set Vol.3 includes a few events that can be played directly from your hand, even if the timing listed is something other than “standard action”.
- This still counts as playing the card normally, so you must pay the cost for it as usual.
“As (a Card) Attacks”
[4. D - Dreadnaught] (2021GB03-L01a & 2021GB03-L01b)
Setup: None (0 cards in hand, 0 resources)
Start of Turn: Drive 1 card.
Treat all cards you play as if you paid the cost for them. You cannot have a hand.
¦As this ruler attacks, drive 1.
Abilities written as “as (a card) attacks” are added directly to the gate after all other automatic abilities triggered “when (a card) attacks” are played and added to the gate. Hence, because an “as (a card) attacks” ability gets added to the gate last, it is then resolved first, before any “when (a card) attacks” abilities that were also triggered.
- An ability written like this is not played, but added directly to the gate by the rules of the game.
- Players can play other cards and abilities in response to this type of ability as normal.
Clarification on Choosing Targets
[Starfall Orb] (2021GB03-007)
Timing: Standard Action
¦Choose 1 of the following:
-Your opponent chooses 1 of their set cards. Put the rest of their other set cards into the graveyard.
-Choose 1 level 3 enemy unit and destroy it.
In Vol.3, there are a few cards that instruct your opponent to choose 1 or more cards. Just as with cards and abilities where you would choose a target, the opponent makes their decision right when you play such a card or ability, before it gets added to the gate and then resolved.
[Rain of Tears] (2021GB03-023)
Timing: Standard Action
¦Your opponent chooses 2 cards from their hand and discards them.
¦Standard Action: [Pay 1 resource and discard this from your hand.] Draw 1 card.
[Helldiver White Knight] (2021GB03-049)
¦"Aerial Reconnaissance" - Standard Action: [DR 3: Zoo Brigade] Look at your opponent's hand. Choose 1 card from among them, and your opponent discards it.
[Nyarlathotep of the Thousand Masks] (2021GB03-110)
?CNT?: You may put 2 of your charges on the bottom of their owners' decks. If you do, choose 1 Endbringer unit in your hand and special summon it.
Discount: You may [Add 1 card from your hand as a face down charge underneath an allied unit or field.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
¦"The Crawling Chaos" - Standard Action: [Put 1 of your charges on the bottom of its owner's deck and DR 1: Exvader.] Choose 1 enemy set card and destroy it.
¦"Messenger of the Ancient Ones" - Instant Action: [DR 2] Without looking at it, add the top card of your deck as a face down charge underneath 1 allied Exvader card.
When a card or ability instructs you to “choose” a card in your hand or deck, it is not treated as choosing a target. Hence, the choice is made when you resolve the card or ability, not when you play it. If your opponent plays [Helldiver White Knight]’s “Aerial Reconnaissance” ability against you, you have a chance to play cards and abilities before you have to reveal your hand and have your opponent choose a card from it.
Rules Changes
Changes Regarding the Destruction Rules Effect
As part of launching booster set Vol.3, we have decided to overhaul the rules for “destroying” cards. The way it worked in the previous rules was deemed too complex and caused conflicts with the intended function of several cards. In this update, we streamlined the rules for destroying cards so that cards that have been “destroyed” are just immediately put into the graveyard, instead of adding a somewhat complex “destruction resolution process” to the gate.
However, this change does conflict with 1 particular card, which is [Just a Flesh Wound] (2020GB01-060). To fix this, we are issuing an errata to the card, to allow it to function under the new rules in a similar fashion to what it did before.
[ERRATA] [Just a Flesh Wound] (2020GB01-060)
Updated Text: Timing: This can be set. If set, you can play it when an allied unit is about to be dealt damage.
¦Choose 1 allied unit. The next damage dealt to that unit deals 0 damage to that unit.
In addition, this rules change has the following implications:
- [Kami’s Vessel] (2020GB01-064 & 2020GB01-UR09), [Solar System Backpacker] (2020GB01-101), and [Volatile Space Mimic] (2020GB01-120) now work without issue as printed. Hence, we are rescinding the erratas for these cards.
- When a destroyed card remains in play through Charge Shield or other means, it is treated as having been “destroyed but not sent to the graveyard”. As a result, any automatic abilities that would be activated by that card’s destruction are activated.
- A “destroyed” card is put into the graveyard, but “put (a card) into the graveyard” does not count as destroying that card.
Changes Regarding Damage Reduction
In the previous rules, when a damage reduction would affect the “next damage dealt”, it referred to only the most immediate damage that was about to be dealt, i.e. the damage (which fulfilled the specified conditions for the damage reduction, if any) that was in the highest position in the gate. Because of the way the gate functions, this limited the utility of damage reduction against abilities and effects that added multiple damage resolution processes to the gate simultaneously. To deal with this, in this update we changed the definition of the “next damage” to refer to any damage currently in the gate (which fulfills the conditions specified for the damage reduction, if any).
This change has the following implications:
- The player controlling the damage reduction effect decides which damage resolution process to apply it to when actually resolving that damage reduction effect (if the damage reduction effect specifies any conditions for the damage it is applied to, the chosen damage resolution process must of course fulfill those conditions).
- For example, if you play a [Rite of Redirection] (2020GB01-083) against a [Maximum Power Beam!] (2021GB02-013), you can reduce to 0 either the 8 damage that would be dealt to your units or the 2 damage that would be dealt to your ruler.
Card Specific Clarifications
- For an explanation on how “as (a card) attacks” works, please see the section titled “As (a Card) Attacks”.
- If you drive a unit, you may normal summon it into your attack zone and then immediately proceed to attack with it.
[15. O - Overlord] (2021GB03-L02a & 2021GB03-L02b)
Setup: 3 cards in hand, 3 resources
Start of Turn: Choose 3 of your resources and ready them. Draw 2 cards.
Summon Cap 2
¦As you play a card, its resource cost always becomes 1.
¦Your resources can only be readied through your Start of Turn.
¦You cannot play events during your opponent's turn, except through ?CNT? or Forced Reveal.
- When you play a card, after the cost of a card is determined, instead of paying the card’s normal cost, you pay exactly 1 resource. Hence, you still pay 1 resource to play cards of level 0 or less, even if a card has its cost reduced through effects like Discount.
- This ability of the Overlord to pay 1 resource for playing any card counts as paying the card’s cost. Hence, if you are instructed to play a card without paying its cost, then you do not pay the 1 resource.
- You cannot play any event cards during an opponent’s turn except when instructed to by a ?CNT? or Forced Reveal. However, you can still play abilities of event cards, such as the one ability of [Volatile Space Mimic] (2020GB01-120), which gets activated when the event is destroyed.
[20. T - Trickster] (2021GB03-L03a & 2021GB03-L03b)
Setup: 3 cards in hand, 2 resources
Start of Turn: Choose 2 of your resources and ready them. Draw 2 cards.
Summon Cap 2
¦As this ruler attacks, deal 1 damage to you.
¦When you have been dealt 2 or more combat damage, once that combat ends, you may discard 1 card of level 2 or less with ?CNT? from your hand. If you do, use its ?CNT?.
¦When a card with ?CNT? in your graveyard would be returned to your deck, instead remove it from the game.
- For an explanation on how “as (a card) attacks” works, please see the section titled “As (a Card) Attacks”.
- The second ability is a delayed automatic ability that is generated when your ruler is dealt combat damage, and it is processed at the end of that combat. Hence, this ability is resolved after all processes regarding combat damage have already been resolved. You decide which card to discard when the ability is getting resolved.
- Damage from Breakthrough counts as combat damage, so if 2 or more damage is dealt with Breakthrough, then the Trickster’s second ability will be activated.
- When performing an Abyssal Summoning, any cards with ?CNT? in your graveyard that you move to the bottom of your deck in order to fulfill the requirements of an Abyssal Concerto will still get removed from the game, due to the Trickster’s replacement effect. However, they will still count towards fulfilling the requirements of the Abyssal Concerto.
[Van Reign, Grand Dragon Pentarch of Blades] (2021GB03-001 & 2021GB03-LUR01)
?TD? Add the top card of your deck underneath this as a charge.
Double Attack, Charge Shield
¦As you normal summon this, it requires and counts for 2 of your summon cap.
¦This cannot be placed in a defense zone.
- If your ruler has a summon cap, then you cannot normal summon this unit unless you can do at least 2 more normal summons before you hit your cap. Once you do play this unit, it counts for 2 normal summons, so if your summon cap is 2, you cannot normal summon any more for the rest of your current turn.
[ERRATA] [Soulgrinder Hex] (2021GB03-016)
Updated Text: Timing: Instant Action
¦Choose 1 ability of an enemy unit and negate it. Then, that unit then loses all abilities until the start of the next turn.
- You can only choose an ability of a unit that is (or just was) in play. You cannot choose an ability that was played from any zone that is not in play, such as an ?OD? ability (which is played from the drive zone, before the unit enters play).
- You can choose and negate automatic abilities of units including ?TD?.
- You can only choose an ability that is in the gate when you play this ability. You cannot choose and negate ongoing abilities that are not added to the gate.
- If a unit has multiple abilities in the gate, you choose only 1 of them to negate. The other abilities will resolve normally (even if the unit with the chosen ability then “loses all abilities” because of this card, since these abilities were already in the gate before that effect was resolved).
[Calabera, Little Red Bomber] (2021GB03-028 & 2021GB03-LUR02)
?CNT?: "Bombs for Everyone!": Choose 1 or more enemy units and divide 5 damage among them.
Forced Reveal (When this card enters your hand or when you drive it, you must reveal this card and normal summon it, counting it for your summon cap.)
¦"A Bomb for You!" - Game 1: When this enters play due to its Forced Reveal, deal 2 damage to your opponent.
¦"And a Bomb for You Too!" - Game 1: When this enters play due to its Forced Reveal, deal 2 damage to you.
- “A Bomb for you!” and “And a Bomb for You too!” have the same trigger and thus are activated simultaneously, and you can choose which order to play them. Keep in mind that if you want to deal damage to your opponent before yourself, then you need to play “And a Bomb for You too!” first, then play “A Bomb for You!”. Once added to the gate, they will be resolved in reverse order, with “A Bomb for You!” getting resolved first.
[Mistwyrm, Clock Tower Guardian] (2021GB03-029)
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Remove 4 OWL or Dragon cards in your graveyard from the game.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
¦"Potentiality Accumulation": When your opponent plays an event or when an allied unit attacks, add the top card of your deck underneath this as a charge.
¦"Potentiality Transfer" - Turn 1: When this attacks, you may put 2 of your charges on the bottom of their owner's decks. If you do, choose 1 ruler or unit and ready it.
¦Your ruler has Breakthrough.
- The “Potentiality Accumulation” ability triggers even when this unit itself attacks.
- You can choose this unit itself with its “Potentiality Transfer” ability.
- When attacking with this unit, both “Potentiality Accumulation” and “Potentiality Transfer” are triggered, regardless of the number of charges under the unit. If [Mistwyrm, Clock Tower Guardian] attacks with 1 charge, then you can play “Potentiality Transfer”, then “Potentiality Accumulation”. This unit will then gain 1 charge with “Potentiality Accumulation”, and then you can spend its 2 charges to use “Potentiality Transfer” (due to the gate resolving things in the reverse order of when they were added to it).
- Because “Potentiality Transfer” is an automatic ability with a Turn 1 limit that is also not optional, once the ability is triggered during a turn, it will not get triggered again even if you did not pay to actually use the ability the first time, and the condition for it is met once more (e.g. you somehow ready this unit and attack again).
[Lucifer, the Lightbringer] (2021GB03-030)
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Put 1 card from your hand on the bottom of your deck.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
Sentinel Summoning, Enhance: OWL or Reginleif, Charge Shield
¦When this enters play, deal 5 damage to all units. This damage cannot be reduced.
¦Instant Action: [DR 2] Turn 1 - Choose 1 of your resources and ready it.
- “This damage cannot be reduced” means that any process that would reduce the damage of the damage application process resulting from this ability is ignored. This includes effects that would change the damage to 0 or 1.
[A7 "Duchess" the Brawler] (2021GB03-046)
?TD? "Deepbreaker Fist": Deal 1 damage to your opponent.
¦"Roaring Thunder Wave" - Standard Action: [DR 3] Choose 1 allied unit. For the rest of the turn, that unit gains +1 STK until it has dealt combat damage to your opponent for the first time this turn.
- If the unit chosen for “Roaring Thunder Wave” has already dealt combat damage to your opponent this turn, then the ability immediately ends its duration without being applied.
[Sword of Bruncvík] (2021GB03-051)
?CNT?: Play this card.
Timing: Instant Action
¦This event can also be played directly from your hand.
¦Choose 1 enemy unit and deal 2 damage to it. Then, deal 2 damage to it again.
- When resolving this card, it adds 2 damage application processes to the gate, which are resolved individually.
- If you use this card on a unit with 2 or less HP and Charge Shield, it will need to spend 2 charges to remain in play (since it will get destroyed twice).
[Ascendant's Wrath] (2021GB03-053)
Timing: Instant Action
¦Reduce the effect damage dealt to 1 ally unit to 0. Then, choose 1 enemy unit and deal 2 damage to it.
- Because you only have to choose an enemy unit, you can still play this card even if no effect damage has been dealt to an allied unit.
- On the other hand, if there is no enemy unit in play, you cannot play this card because you cannot choose a valid target for it.
[Parzival] (2021GB03-054)
Timing: Instant Action
¦This event can also be played directly from your hand.
¦Choose 1 allied unit. Until the end of turn, the chosen unit cannot be destroyed by anything other than damage. (It does not get destroyed by abilities and effects such as Deadly.)
- Until the end of the current turn, the unit that this effect is applied to is only destroyed if it has taken more damage than its HP value. It ignores anything else that would destroy it.
- A unit that is under the effect of this card cannot be destroyed as a cost for cards like [Solar System Backpacker] (2020GB01-101) (since it cannot be destroyed, it does not count as having paid the cost).
[ERRATA] [Oni of the Tatari] (2021GB03-055 & 2021GB03-LUR03)
Updated Text: ?CNT?: Put this into play. Your opponent gains control of it.
Forced Reveal
Triple Attack
¦This can only attack the center column.
¦While you have 1 or more cards in your hand, this unit loses Triple Attack.
¦When this would be put into a graveyard from anywhere else, instead remove it from the game.
- When this card enters the graveyard, it will always be removed from the game regardless of which zone it was in beforehand.
[ERRATA] [Draconoid Dreadnaught "Fuse-Ikazuchi"] (2021GB03-057)
Updated Text: Discount: You may [DR 4: Military] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
Retaliate
¦"Mobile Fortress" - Turn 1: When this attacks, you may choose to do 1 of the following:
-Special summon 1 Military unit of level 1 or less from your hand.
-Ready 1 Military card of level 1 or less in play.
¦All of your Military cards gain +1 STK.
- If you choose to play the “Mobile Fortress” ability, you also choose 1 which of the two abilities to resolve.
- Both modes of the “Mobile Fortress” ability do not require you to choose a target. Hence, you decide what unit to special summon or ready when the ability actually gets resolved.
- Just as with Charge Shield, “remains in play” means the card “does not move from its current zone, any amount of damage it had taken is set to 0, and any effect with a specific duration that was applied to it immediately ends”. So if you use the “Lord of the Ayakashi” ability as this unit would be destroyed by damage, it instead remains in play, with all damage that was dealt to it up to that point being set to 0.
[ERRATA] [Rite of Ophidian Reincarnation] (2021GB03-068)
Updated Text: Timing: Standard Action
¦Put the top card of your deck into the graveyard. Then, special summon 1 Supernatural unit in your graveyard and put 1 allied unit into the graveyard. If you do, your opponent puts 1 of their cards in play into the graveyard.
- When the final ability of [Húlí of the Spider Lily] gets played, it does not choose any card in a hand or in play. The opponent makes this decision when the ability gets actually resolved.
- Likewise, the Supernatural unit to be special summoned and the card that the opponent puts into their graveyard are not chosen as [Rite of Ophidian Reincarnation] is played. Those choices are made when the card gets actually resolved. Hence, if a Supernatural unit card is placed into your graveyard from your deck while you are resolving the effects of this card, you can then immediately special summon that unit.
- In both cases, the ability or card above is not actually choosing a card in play, hence they are not affected by abilities that say “This cannot be chosen by your opponent's events or abilities.”, such as the one on [Goldenscale Paladin] (2021GB02-004). If a card with that kind of ability is the only card the opponent has left in play, they must still put it into the graveyard.
[ERRATA] [Zetsuya, Master Onmyoji] (2021GB03-063)
Updated Text: ¦Your opponent cannot special summon.
¦Instant Action: [DR 3] Choose 1?OD? or ?TD? ability and negate it.
- Even if there are multiple ?OD? and/or ?TD? abilities in the gate, you can only choose 1 of them to negate.
- You must choose which ?OD? or ?TD? ability to negate as you play this ability.
[Exo-Armor Trooper "Yuhi"] (2021GB03-064)
?OD? Choose 1 Tactics or Technology event of level 2 or less in your deck and set it.
Breakthrough
- When choosing a card with this ?OD? ability, you must reveal it to your opponent before setting it to confirm that it has either the Tactics or Technology attribute and is of level 2 or less.
[Akagi of the Centipede] (2021GB03-066)
Concealment(You may set a unit with Concealment.)
¦This can be normal summoned from your set zone.
¦"Thank you for your business!": When your opponent plays an event of level 1 or more, you may special summon this from your set zone. If you do, choose 1 enemy set card and destroy it.
- If you want to play the “Thank you for your business!” ability when your opponent plays an event of level 1 or more, then you must reveal this card from your set zone and play the ability. If you do not reveal this card, then it means you have chosen not to trigger this ability, and you cannot play the same ability until the opponent plays another event of level 1 or more.
- The card to destroy with “Thank you for your business!” must be chosen as you play this automatic ability.
- After playing “Thank you for your business!”, you may choose not to special summon this unit while resolving the ability. If you decide not to, then the chosen card does not get destroyed, and this card is returned face down into its set zone.
- When an event card of level 1 or more is played from a set zone, because that card is immediately moved to the gate, it cannot be chosen to be destroyed with “Thank you for your business!”.
[ERRATA] [Saburo of the Kamaitachi] (2021GB03-073)
Updated Text:¦Turn 1 - When you're dealt damage, ready this.
¦"You feel lucky, punk?" - ?Turn 1? - Standard Action: Each player chooses 1 card in play that they don't control. Then, play Rock-Paper-Scissors with your opponent until a winner is determined. The winner may put 1 of their cards in play into the graveyard. If they do, the card that was chosen beforehand by the same player is put into the graveyard.
- You choose which card you intend to put into your opponent’s graveyard as you play the “You feel lucky, punk?” ability.
- You select which card you have in play to put into the graveyard once you have won the round of Rock-Paper-Scissors as in the course of resolving this ability.
[ERRATA] [Rite of Grim Sacrifice] (2021GB03-080)
Updated Text: Timing: Standard Action
¦Choose 1 allied unit in play and 1 enemy unit of a level equal to or less than the chosen allied unit. Put the chosen allied unit into the graveyard. Then, destroy the chosen enemy unit.
- You must choose both 1 allied unit and 1 enemy unit (of an appropriate level) as you play this card.
- Even if the chosen allied unit somehow avoids being put into the graveyard, the chosen enemy unit is still destroyed.
[Space Dullahan, Star Rider] (2021GB03-091)
Enhance: Space Peeps or Future Folk (As this enters play, you may choose 1 allied Space Peeps or Future Folk unit to add underneath this as a charge.)
¦When this is Enhanced and enters play, look at the top card of your deck. If that card is a Space Peeps or Future Folk card of level 1 or less, then you may drive it. Otherwise, put it on the bottom of your deck.
¦While this has at least 1 charge, it gains +1 STK.
- The phrase “(a unit) is Enhanced” means “(a unit) has a charge associated with through the effect of Enhance”.
[Showdown: Adriano VS Shadowhand] (2021GB03-095)
?CNT?: Choose 1 Space Peeps or Future Folk unit of level 1 or less in your graveyard. Special summon it.
Timing: Standard Action
¦Declare either Future Folk or Space Peeps. Look at the top 4 cards of your deck, and from among those cards, you may choose up to 2 units that have the declared attribute with a combined level of 2 or less. Special summon the chosen units and put the remaining cards on the bottom of your deck. Then, use all ?TD? and ?OD? abilities on those units that were special summoned.
- If both special summoned units have an ?OD? and/or ?TD? ability, you may play them in any order.
- If a single ability has both ?OD? and ?TD?, you still can only play it once.
[Weirdship Black Antlion] (2021GB03-099)
¦"Black Hole Field": When this is attacked by an enemy unit, choose that 1 attacking unit if it's level 1 or less. Destroy the chosen unit at the start of the damage step.
¦"Jump Drive" - Turn 1: When you're dealt damage, you may place this into another allied attack zone or defense zone that is empty.
- A unit destroyed through the “Black Hole Field” ability is destroyed before it does combat damage.
- The card 2021GB03-097 [Maxwell's Demon] allows you to reduce the level of any enemy unit you choose when you play a card or ability. With it in play, you can use the “Black Hole Field” ability to destroy an attacking unit of level 2 or less.
- If you “place” this unit into an attack zone, it is placed in a ready state.
[Weirdship B.F.D.] (2021GB03-102)
?CNT?: Play Rock-Paper-Scissors with your opponent until a winner is determined. If you're the winner, then deal 1 damage to your opponent.
Breakthrough
¦"Mega Drill Breaker": When this deals damage to your opponent, play Rock-Paper-Scissors with your opponent until a winner is determined. If you're the winner, then destroy this and deal 2 damage to your opponent.
- The damage from the “Mega Drill Breaker” ability is dealt in addition to the damage that triggered it. When resolving damage, the damage from “Mega Drill Breaker” is resolved first.
- When you play this “Mega Drill Breaker” ability and win the round of Rock-Paper-Scissors, if this unit somehow remains in play (through something like Charge Shield) even after being destroyed, then this unit’s “Mega Drill Breaker” ability will trigger again off of the 2 damage just dealt by the ability itself.
[Space Doppelgänger] (2021GB03-106)
?OD? Choose 1 enemy unit of level 2 or less. So long as the chosen unit remains in play, this unit's ATK and HP become equal to the original values of the chosen unit's ATK and HP respectively.
- The resulting changes in stats from the above effect is applied in order of application, just as with any other effect that changes the numerical values on a card. For example, let’s say that you played this unit while you have a [The Bloody Forest] (2020GB01-013) in play, and you choose a unit with 2 ATK and 2 HP with the unit’s ability. Because the [The Bloody Forest] was in play first, its effect is applied first, then [Space Doppelgänger]’s ?OD? gets applied. As a result, [The Bloody Forest]’s bonus is overwritten by this ?OD?’s effect, and the [Space Doppelgänger] ends up with 2 ATK and 2 HP.
- In a similar scenario, if you put a [The Bloody Forest] in play while your [Space Doppelgänger] is already in play, then [The Bloody Forest]’s effect is applied after the effect of [Space Doppelgänger]’s ?OD?. As a result, [Space Doppelgänger] will have 3 ATK and 3 HP.
[ERRATA] [Megidos the Damned, Draconic Abomination] (2021GB03-109 & 2021GB03-LUR05)
Updated Text: ?CNT?: "Probability Denial": Choose 1 of the following, then remove this from the game:
-Your opponent discards 2 cards from their hand.
-Choose 1 enemy card in play and destroy it.
¦When this enters play, choose up to 2 Exvader cards in your graveyard and add them underneath this as charges.
¦"Corrupted Fate" - Standard Action: [Put 1 charge under this on the bottom of its owner's deck.] Until the end of turn, ignore ?CNT? for any damage that this deals to your opponent.
¦"Erased Potential" - When your opponent plays an event of level 1 or less, you may put 1 charge under this on the bottom of its owner's deck. If you do, negate that event.
- After choosing one of the options with “Probability Denial”, remove this card in your Counter zone from the game.
- When playing the “Probability Denial” ability, if your opponent has no cards in play, you must choose the “Your opponent discards 2 cards from their hand.” option. If your opponent has no cards in your hand or has no hand zone, then ignore that part of the ability and remove this card in your Counter zone from the game.
- When playing “Probability Denial” and choosing its first option, you do not get to choose which cards your opponent discards. They decide which cards to discard when the ability is resolved.
[ERRATA] [Hound of Tindalos] (2021GB03-111 & 2021GB03-UR17)
Updated Text: ¦This unit can be normal summoned into your attack zone as an instant action.
?TD? "Relentless Predator": Choose 1 enemy unit of level 1 or less and add it underneath this as a charge. When this leaves play, your opponent gains control of that same unit.
¦If you're playing an Endbringer card from your hand, you may remove this card in your graveyard from the game. If you do, the card you're playing costs 1 less to play.
- For details on how its first ability works, please see the section titled “Normal Summon as an Instant Action”.
- When you normal summon this unit as an instant action, you can only normal summon it into one of your attack zones. When you normal summon it as a standard action, you can summon it into your attack zone or defense zone.
[Yumemi Dori of the Butterfly] (2021GB03-S01)
?OD? Look at the top card of your deck. If it's a card of level 2 or less, you may drive it. Otherwise, put it on the bottom of your deck.
- Even if the card that you looked at is a card of level 2 or less that can be set, you must reveal it to your opponent first to confirm that it is indeed level 2 or less.

Updates to Existing Rulers
The following changes have been made to existing rulers in order to fix power imbalances between certain rulers. This was done with the intention of improving the diversity of decks in Gate Ruler’s current metagame, which we believe is important for the long-term enjoyment of our game.
2. B - Berserker: Deck level cap has been increased from 80 to 120.
8. H - Highlander: Legendary card cap has been increased from 2 to 3. CNT cap has been increased from 16 to 20.
11. K - Knight: Starting hand for Setup has been increased from 2 cards to 4 cards.
12. L - Legion: Starting hand for Setup has been increased from 2 cards to 3 cards. Legendary card cap has been increased from 2 to 3. CNT cap has been increased from 16 to 20.
23. W - Wizard: Starting hand for Setup has been increased from 2 cards to 3 cards. Second ability under Modifiers has been changed as follows:
Updated text: ¦"Resource Channeling": At the end of your turn, ready this and 1 resource. During your opponent's turn, you may exhaust this as if it was a resource in your resource zone.
We will continue to keep a close eye on the metagame through information from tournaments and other means. Depending on how the metagame develops, we may make further changes in the future to improve rulers regarded as too weak, or even potentially nerfing rulers regarded as too strong. We are committed to improving your gameplay experience the best we can, and we ask for your understanding as we continue to tweak and optimize the rulers as necessary.
We are deeply sorry for this situation. What happened was a clear breach of proper procedure, and we are fully committed to never allowing something like this to happen again. For future products, we will ensure better communication between our development team and our rules management teams, and we will create a system for the latter to be able to routinely check the work being done by development. Through this, we aim to provide you quality card texts that are fully consistent with the game’s comprehensive rules.
We thank you for your understanding and continued support of Gate Ruler.
Sincerely,
The Gate Ruler Team
